Copper Nickel (Kunifer) Brake Pipe

When you're tackling corroded brake lines—a standard MOT headache on UK roads—you need a material that balances safety, durability, and workability. While standard copper is soft and easy to bend, it lacks the structural fatigue strength of the original steel lines. Steel, on the other hand, is a nightmare to route and flare on the car. This Copper Nickel (commonly known as Kunifer, CuNi, or NiCopp) pipe is the professional’s choice, offering the perfect middle ground for brake line fabrication.

Why Copper Nickel Beats Standard Copper

Standard copper is highly malleable, but it can work-harden over time due to chassis vibration and road shock, making it brittle and prone to cracking. Copper Nickel is a much tougher alloy. It features a significantly higher fatigue strength and burst pressure rating, meaning it can handle the high-pressure pulses of modern ABS systems without breaking a sweat. It also offers superior resistance to road salt and moisture, ensuring your brake lines won't rot out after a couple of British winters.

On the Tools: Workshop Advice

Because Kunifer is tougher than standard copper, it requires a bit more effort to flare, but it yields incredibly crisp, clean DIN or SAE flares when used with a decent quality flaring tool. It holds its shape beautifully once bent, allowing you to replicate neat, factory-style runs along the bulkhead and chassis rails without the pipe sagging. For tight radii, we highly recommend using a proper pipe-bending tool to avoid kinking.

  • High Fatigue Strength: Resists work-hardening and cracking caused by engine and road vibrations.
  • Excellent Corrosion Resistance: Shrugs off road salt, moisture, and grime far better than steel.
  • High Pressure Rating: Safely handles the high-pressure demands of modern hydraulic braking systems.
  • Clean Flares: Holds its shape perfectly under the flaring die for leak-free joints.
