DOT 5 Silicone Brake Fluid
The Permanent Solution for Classic and Low-Use Braking Systems
For classic restorations, military fleets, or vehicles that spend long periods in storage, standard glycol-based brake fluid (DOT 3, 4, and 5.1) is a constant maintenance headache. Because glycol is hygroscopic, it actively absorbs moisture from the atmosphere. Over time, this water contamination lowers the boiling point of your fluid and causes internal corrosion, leading to seized calipers, pitted wheel cylinders, and degraded seals.
Automec Original DOT 5 Silicone Brake Fluid solves this problem at the chemical level. Because silicone is completely hydrophobic, it repels moisture rather than absorbing it. Once installed in a clean system, it prevents internal rust and preserves a high boiling point of 260°C for the lifespan of the fluid. This eliminates the need for biennial brake fluid changes, offering reliable pedal feel and corrosion protection for up to 100,000 miles.
Workshop Benefits and Paintwork Protection
Every mechanic knows the anxiety of bleeding brakes near fresh paint. Spill a drop of standard glycol fluid, and it will strip paint down to the bare metal in minutes. Automec DOT 5 is completely non-corrosive to paintwork—if you spill it, you simply wipe it off with no damage done. Additionally, its high thermal stability and low flammability make it a safer option for high-consequence environments, which is why it has been the standard-issue fluid for US military light vehicles for decades.
Crucial Installation Notes for the Workshop
To get the maximum performance from silicone brake fluid, it must be handled and installed correctly:
Zero Compatibility: DOT 5 silicone fluid cannot be mixed with DOT 3, DOT 4, or DOT 5.1 glycol-based fluids. Mixing them creates a gelatinous sludge that will clog brake lines and cause system failure.
System Prep: For a successful conversion, the braking system must be completely drained, flushed (ideally with denatured alcohol), and rebuilt with fresh seals to ensure no old glycol or moisture remains.
ABS Warning: DOT 5 silicone fluid is not suitable for vehicles fitted with Anti-lock Braking Systems (ABS). The rapid cycling of ABS pumps can cause silicone fluid to aerate, leading to a spongy pedal. Use only in non-ABS systems.
Pour, Don't Shake: Do not shake the bottle before pouring. Silicone fluid can trap micro-bubbles easily, which will make bleeding the system difficult if introduced into the master cylinder.
Complete the job. Always use Automec Original DOT 5 Silicone Brake Fluid supplied around the world since 1982.
DOT 5 Silicone Brake Fluid repels moisture so, unlike standard polyglycol brake fluid, it never needs changing.
Rust and corrosion are inhibited as moisture is kept out of the system and the high boiling point of 260 degrees C is maintained throughout the life of the product therefore ensuring consistent, safe performance.
Does not damage your paintwork if spilled.
Will not easily catch fire in the event of an accident.
Used exclusively by the US military in their light vehicles.
DOT 5 Silicone Brake Fluid will essentially eliminate brake system wear and corrosion for at least 70,000 miles with service periods in excess of 100,000 miles being feasible.
Copper pipes are more traditional and easier to work with however Copper Nickel (aka CuNI, Kunifer, cupro-nickel or NiCopp) is more resistant to corrosion and has a higher fatigue strength.
We can manufacture pipes to your exact specifications.
