DOT 5 Silicone Brake Fluid

The "Fit and Forget" Solution for Classic and Custom Brake Systems

Standard polyglycol brake fluids (DOT 3, 4, and 5.1) are hygroscopic—meaning they actively absorb moisture from the atmosphere. For daily drivers, this is managed by regular two-year fluid changes. But for classics, weekend toys, or custom builds that spend time sitting in damp garages, absorbed moisture settles in the lowest points of the system. The result is pitted caliper bores, seized wheel cylinders, and a spongy pedal.

Automec Original DOT 5 Silicone Brake Fluid solves this problem at the molecular level. Because it is silicone-based, it completely repels moisture. Once stripped, flushed, and filled, the system is protected against internal rust and corrosion indefinitely. With a dry boiling point of 260°C that never degrades due to water contamination, you get consistent, firm pedal pressure every time you hit the road, even after months of winter storage.

Real-World Workshop Advantages

  • Zero Paint Damage: Standard glycol fluid acts like paint stripper the second it touches bodywork. Automec DOT 5 is completely inert and will not ruin your custom paint job or engine bay finish if spilled during bleeding.
  • Military-Grade Durability: This is the same formulation relied upon by the US military for their light tactical vehicles. It is engineered to withstand extreme environments without breaking down, offering a service life easily exceeding 100,000 miles.
  • Reduced Fire Risk: Unlike glycol fluids, silicone fluid has a high flashpoint and will not readily ignite in the event of a front-end impact or ruptured line.

The Ultimate Brake Overhaul: Kunifer Lines + DOT 5

If you are plumbing a brake system from scratch, your choice of pipe matters. While standard copper pipe is traditional and easy to flare, upgrading to Copper-Nickel (Kunifer / CuNi / NiCopp) is the professional standard. Kunifer offers significantly higher fatigue strength and superior resistance to road salt and external corrosion.

Pairing high-fatigue Kunifer hard lines with Automec DOT 5 silicone fluid creates an virtually indestructible braking system. You prevent corrosion from the outside with the copper-nickel alloy, and eliminate corrosion from the inside with the silicone fluid. It is the ultimate combination for a lifetime rebuild.

Mechanic's Installation Note

Do not mix DOT 5 with glycol-based fluids (DOT 3, 4, or 5.1). They are chemically incompatible and will jelly, leading to system failure. To switch to DOT 5, the entire braking system must be completely dismantled, thoroughly cleaned of all old fluid (ideally using denatured alcohol or brake cleaner, then dried with compressed air), and rebuilt with fresh seals before filling.

  • Complete the job. Always use Automec Original DOT 5 Silicone Brake Fluid supplied around the world since 1982.
  • DOT 5 Silicone Brake Fluid repels moisture so, unlike standard polyglycol brake fluid, it never needs changing.
  • Rust and corrosion are inhibited as moisture is kept out of the system and the high boiling point of 260 degrees C is maintained throughout the life of the product therefore ensuring consistent, safe performance.
  • Does not damage your paintwork if spilled.
  • Will not easily catch fire in the event of an accident.
  • Used exclusively by the US military in their light vehicles.
  • DOT 5 Silicone Brake Fluid will essentially eliminate brake system wear and corrosion for at least 70,000 miles with service periods in excess of 100,000 miles being feasible.

Copper pipes are more traditional and easier to work with however Copper Nickel (aka CuNI, Kunifer, cupro-nickel or NiCopp) is more resistant to corrosion and has a higher fatigue strength.

We can manufacture pipes to your exact specifications.
