If you are plumbing in a new braking system or replacing corroded lines for an MOT, choosing the right pipe material is critical. While standard copper is often the default choice because it’s cheap and soft, Copper-Nickel (commonly known as Kunifer, CuNi, or NiCopp) is the professional choice for lines that need to last the lifetime of the vehicle.
In the workshop, Kunifer strikes the perfect balance between workability and durability. It is slightly stiffer to bend than pure copper, but this is actually an advantage; it holds its shape far better when you are snaking it over subframes and clipping it into OE chassis mounts. When it comes to flaring, it doesn't squash or split under the flaring tool die, allowing you to get crisp, consistent SAE or DIN flares that seal first time.
The real-world benefit of Copper-Nickel is its superior fatigue strength and corrosion resistance. Pure copper can suffer from work-hardening over time due to engine vibration and chassis flex, which can lead to hairline cracks. Kunifer handles these high-vibration environments without breaking a sweat. Furthermore, its resistance to road salt and moisture is unmatched—essential for UK roads where winter grit quickly eats away at steel and inferior copper lines.
Why Use Copper-Nickel (Kunifer) Brake Pipe?
High Fatigue Strength: Resists work-hardening and cracking caused by chassis vibration and high-pressure braking cycles.
Superior Corrosion Resistance: Highly resistant to road salt, grime, and moisture, preventing the crusty oxidation that causes MOT failures.
Excellent Flaring Properties: Holds its structural integrity under the pressure of a flaring tool, ensuring leak-free joints.
Professional Finish: Stiffer than pure copper, allowing you to route neat, straight lines that stay secure in their clips.

Copper pipes are more traditional and easier to work with however Copper Nickel (aka CuNI, Kunifer, cupro-nickel or NiCopp) is more resistant to corrosion and has a higher fatigue strength.
