If you’ve ever spent an afternoon fighting rusty, seized steel brake lines on a vehicle up on the ramps, you know why choosing the right replacement pipe matters. While standard copper is a common go-to because it’s cheap and easy to bend, Copper Nickel (commonly known as Kunifer, CuNi, or NiCopp) is the professional's choice for a fit-and-forget job.

Why Choose Copper Nickel Over Standard Copper?

In the workshop, we look for two things in a brake pipe: how easy it is to work with, and how long it’s going to last once the vehicle is back on the road. Kunifer strikes the perfect balance:

  • Superior Corrosion Resistance: Unlike steel, it won’t rust. Unlike standard copper, it has massive resistance to road salt, grime, and environmental moisture—making it ideal for wet UK winters and salty coastal roads.
  • High Fatigue Strength: Standard copper can suffer from work-hardening and vibration cracking over time. Copper Nickel has a much higher fatigue strength, meaning it handles the high-pressure pulses of modern braking systems (including ABS) without breaking a sweat.
  • Excellent Workability: It is slightly stiffer than pure copper, but it still bends beautifully by hand or with a pipe bender without kinking. Crucially, it takes a flare (SAE or DIN) cleanly and seals reliably against unions.

Workshop Tips for Best Results

When flaring Kunifer, ensure you use a decent quality flaring tool. Because the material is tougher than standard copper, cheap budget flaring kits can struggle to grip the pipe properly, leading to lopsided flares. Always deburr the cut end inside and out before flaring to guarantee a perfect, leak-free seat on the flare union.
