Copper Nickel (Kunifer) Brake Pipe

Any mechanic who has spent time under a vehicle on a lift knows the headache of rotten steel brake lines. While standard copper pipe is a common go-to because it’s cheap and easy to bend, it lacks the fatigue strength required for high-vibration areas and can work-hardened over time. Copper Nickel—commonly known in the trade as Kunifer, CuNi, or NiCopp—is the professional standard for brake line replacement.

This copper-nickel alloy offers the perfect balance of workability and durability. It provides the extreme corrosion resistance of copper, meaning it won't degrade when subjected to harsh UK road salt and moisture, combined with a much higher tensile strength and fatigue resistance that behaves more like steel under pressure.

Why Use Kunifer Over Standard Copper or Steel?

  • Superior Fatigue Strength: Unlike standard copper, which can become brittle and crack under constant chassis vibration and pressure cycles, Kunifer is highly resistant to work-hardening, ensuring long-term safety.
  • Maximum Corrosion Resistance: It will not rust or pit like OEM steel lines, making it a "fit-and-forget" solution for brake system overhauls.
  • Excellent Workability: While stiffer than pure copper, it is still malleable enough to be bent by hand or with a pipe bender without kinking, and it takes a perfect SAE or DIN flare every time.
  • Professional Finish: It holds its shape beautifully along the chassis runs, giving you a neat, factory-looking install that passes MOT inspections with flying colours.

Workshop Advice

When working with Copper Nickel pipe, we recommend using a high-quality turret or bench-mounted flaring tool to get clean, precise flares. While it can be bent by hand for gentle curves, using a dedicated mini pipe bender for tight radiuses prevents any flattening of the tube wall, ensuring unrestricted fluid flow and maximum pressure retention.

Please note: The physical appearance of the pipe coil may vary slightly from the image shown depending on manufacturing runs, but the material specification and performance standards remain identical.

Copper pipes are more traditional and easier to work with however Copper Nickel (aka CuNI, Kunifer, cupro-nickel or NiCopp) is more resistant to corrosion and has a higher fatigue strength.
