Copper-Nickel (Kunifer) Brake Pipe Coil

When it comes to plumbing brake lines, you have choices. Standard copper is soft and easy to bend, but it lacks tensile strength and can work-harden over time, leading to cracking under vibration. Steel is tough but a nightmare to bend, flare, and rusts if you look at it wrong. Copper-Nickel (commonly known as Kunifer, CuNi, or NiCopp) is the professional standard for a reason: it gives you the corrosion resistance of copper with the structural integrity of steel.

Why Kunifer Belongs in Your Workshop

If you are replacing rusted-out brake lines on a vehicle that sees daily road use—especially on salted UK winter roads—Kunifer is the only sensible choice. It is highly resistant to salt-induced corrosion and has a significantly higher fatigue strength than standard copper, meaning it won’t crack under the constant pressure cycles and chassis vibrations of a heavy braking system.

From a practical workshop perspective, Kunifer is a pleasure to work with:

  • Easy to Form: It can be bent by hand or with a hand-held pipe bender without kinking, allowing you to replicate complex OE pipe runs with minimal fuss.
  • Perfect Flares: It flares cleanly and consistently, whether you are doing single (SAE) or double (DIN) flares. It won't split at the mouth like cheap copper often does under pressure from a flaring tool.
  • Longevity: Once installed, a Kunifer brake line will easily outlast the vehicle it’s fitted to, meaning no comebacks from customers with leaky lines.

Pro-Tip for Installation

While Kunifer is much easier to bend than steel, always use a proper tube bender for tight radiuses to prevent flattening the pipe and restricting fluid flow. When flaring, ensure you deburr the cut end inside and out first; this ensures the flare seats perfectly in the union without weeping under pressure.

Copper pipes are more traditional and easier to work with however Copper Nickel (aka CuNI, Kunifer, cupro-nickel or NiCopp) is more resistant to corrosion and has a higher fatigue strength.
